Question by Helmaroc: Are my fish in danger of each other?
My fish often lash out at each other, especially when there is loud/shaking commotion in my room. They don’t seem to be biting, but I would like to know. They also jump around, sometimes hitting the sides of the tank. Will they injure themselves? I always tell guests not to jump, as that seems to frighten the fish. If it helps, they are Golden Wonder Killifish.

I think they should see a psychologist. They could be just crying for help.

It seems to me your fish are in a stressful environment…put them somehwere where there isn’t constant traffic (of people), not near a window, a tv or radio, or anything that makes loud noises or vibrations.
Also, make sure they have a safe haven. Rocks or (fake) plants to hide under/in. Everyone needs to hide now and then.

Water is a great conductor of sounds and vibrations. Therefore, fish are very sensitive of both kinds of disturbances. And yes, if they hit the side of the tank hard enough, they can injure themselves. Not to scare you but Ive seen fish in commercial aquariums kill themselves during feeding because they werent watching where they were going in the confusion and smacked into the side of the tank. I suggest that when you have company that you cover the tank with a lightweight cloth and ask your company to avoid jumping or yelling or dragging around furniture or anything else that can cause loud noise and vibrations through your floor. Just remember to remove the cloth when your company leaves. Hope this helps.
